THE VISUAL BOOK

The form of the traditional book is almost magical. The pages, bound and encased within covers have the mysterious quality of hiding something from the viewer. What is hidden is revealed and then subsequently hidden again as one turns the pages. All of this happens in a kind of musical, rhythmical pattern.

In the workshop this will be one of the important characteristics of the book that we will explore as a means for creating a visually expressive book. In addition, we will also examine the visual dynamics of the single page, in particular the figure/ground structure. Finally we will look at the relationship, both visually and conceptually, between the words and the images of the expressive book.

Students will create at least three small books. The focus of each will be on the development of conceptual themes: the craft and binding techniques will be kept simple. Words and texts may be used for some of the books, however calligraphy is not a requirement.
SIMPLE BOOK-MAKING AND DESIGN

This program explores the various design factors involved in creating a simple manuscript book.

This will include traditional page design with consideration for appropriate writing size and scale, the design of a title page, colophon page, and the relationship between writing and image. Students will also learn a simple binding structure that can be used for small books and journals.

Previous study of a miniscule hand such as italic, foundational, or uncials is required.
