ENIGMATERRA 2

A visual/verbal book by Thomas Ingmire

Enigmaterra 2, is a second book inspired by the work of the German artist, Jonas Burgert. The impetus for the first book was a visit to Jonas’s Berlin studio in the early summer of 2023. I was captured by the extraordinary size, scale, and complexity of  his paintings. The paintings, filled with “human-like” figures as well as animals, are at the same time abstract, real, and surreal. They are both dreary and dark and wildly colorful. They have often been described as theater pieces and placed in the context of paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. My work was a response to the paintings as well as to the poem “Enigmaterra” a verbal picture of the paintings written by poet, David Annwn.
