SELF- PORTRAIT AS EXUVIATION
A visual/verbal book by Thomas Ingmire
Dean Rader was inspired to write his poem by the Jonas Burgert painting titled Raube. Caterpillar is the English translation of this German word. Dean writes that for him, the painting explores "transformation." This is an accurate description of many of Burgert's paintings. Animals that are almost human and vice versa, distorted figures and faces and warped and ambiguous spaces are common. Everything seems to be in transition from one state to another. As I reflected on the poem and the painting, I saw important links to all acts of creation. An artist's painting, often emerging from a series of sketches, will then go through a number of phases in its development. This book, as a visual interpretation of Dean's poem, attempts to explore the idea of creative transformation, with the goal to, in itself, become evidence of the process.
